cryovac recordings seeks out characters that give depth to the soundscape of detroit s underground. cryovac individuals believe in their path and stand for their art. ray7 is a multifaceted musical being surviving an ever evolving technosphere. he is an unknown hero that holds his own sonicly on any side of the planet. ray7 provides the power needed for the cryovac machine to hatch a new plot. cryovac exists due to the efforts of craftsmen and artists that work together to make something unique. side a starts with an ancient zulu chant that provides protection as well as a funky sort of techno break pop. the next track grinds in to a ruff and gritty narration of ghetto mind-set under the influence of classic electro. a constant roll moves the last track into addition and subtraction inside of a spartan groove that breaks and turns with strength. side b opens with a busy 4/4 be-bop lackadaisically drifting with dreamy synth over the chatter of voice, hi-hats, and reverb broken down by a 303 buzzing. track two is a dark and sloppy incomprehensible subliminal sing-a-long building and ebbing around a stark kick and clap.

the afro-funk side of the latin soul maestro! born in gao (mali), boncana maiga is one of the most talented and popular producer of west-african music since the 60s. he studied flute and latin arrangements in cuba during the 60s and founded the famous les maravillas du mali in 1968. he became orchestra leader for the national ivorian tv in abidjan in the mid-seventies, and toured all over the world with the famous africando band. during his recording sessions in nyc at the beginning of the 80’s with a lot of “latin musicians” from puerto rico, venezuela or colombia, boncana maïga also recorded few rare funky tracks with heavy breaks! with the artist, we decided to reissue four rare tracks from 1978 to 1982 dedicated to dancefloor, including a really rare soundtrack for the oil company of ivory coast called petroci. in 2018, hell be back on tour with les maravillas du mali, still have a weekly tv show on tv5 monde and with this reissue will continue to warm your afro-funk parties! fully licensed, 12inch vinyl (45 rpm) including interview. remastered by the carvery!

presence unknown is a new vinyl and digital label curated by longtime producer and dj, neil keating aka controlled weirdness. neil has been behind the decks and deeply involved in all aspects of club and underground sound system culture since the early eighties. he has released his music on numerous underground labels and performed all over the world, from plush clubs to dirty warehouses. worth a read are a couple of published articles by neil regarding his experiences on the dance floor of underground clubs in london and new york in the eighties. see links at the bottom of this page for these as well as a detailed biography and discography. there is also a link to a recent 40-minute interview with distant planet tv that explores his cultured rave history. the second release on presence unknown contains four future-retro house grooves from controlled weirdness crafted using a variety of analogue and digital hardware in his south london studio.

amsterdam label taped artifact has lined up an ep from merv aka brian oldenborg and jan christiansen. after the re-melted reissue on styrax in 2015, this is the pairs third new ep in three years since coming back after first making music back in the mid nineties. their warm dub and techno style is still very much fresh and arresting. blueprint opens the ep with eight enthralling minutes of percolating drums and shuffling hi hats. frosty yet warm, it’s a cavernous affair with a hypnotic riffs sucking you in over and over. shine is more upright techno, but the rock solid kicks are still draped with rippling, static coated chords that ripple out in all directions. rotundum closes things out with synth waves gently breaking over hunched drums that build the pressure. it’s tense and engaging while remaining thoroughly atmospheric.

repress! the impression one gets of django django is of a band laying down the first, meticulously measured borders on some vast map of a world that only they are privy to. correspondent to that, each track is like its own nation of harmonies, rhythms and textures. >we didnt put much conscious thought into making it sound like an album - we thought wed let any similarities between the songs come out by themselves,< explains tommy.

hemingway s debut ep on cosmic resonance records is a musical memoir. the sounds you’ll hear are drawn from projects created as far back as 2011 and as recently as 2017. the music has evolved over the years, from yacht-funk playfulness to the exploration of cosmic jazz. one constant throughout, though, has been a reverence and love for the dance floor and dance music culture. to bring this broad spectrum of musical creativity together, hemingway enlisted the help of his longtime friend (and now label-mate), chris evans, to weave improvised guitar unicorns (guitarnicorns) throughout. the result is an album that fuses jazz, funk, disco, balearica, pysch-rock and amazonian spirituality into a cosmically resonant vibe.

primus motor sees ekman return to many of the sounds that gained him a reputation as an artist on labels like bunker and berceuse heroique. although harsh bucking acid lines, pockmarked notes, brutal beats and eerie echo are all present, a new tone has been added to the caustic palette. a psychological nuance, an undercurrent of the inchoate has been investigated and exploited to chilling effect. crippling psychoses. debilitating neuroses. physical pain. suffering stalks this first full vinyl album. sinister sounds encircle the eight offerings, hovering like vultures over inhospitable plains of ashen grey, jagged peaks and dark sweeping swamps. hope is all but drawn away in this bleached audio landscape, drained by sheer synthlines and reduced renderings. amidst the sorrow and strain there are pin pricks of joy, albeit bleak and pallid ones. an album that unnerves as it engages, a collection of icy radiance and industrial indifference from a dutch master.

louie vega re-ignites the disco classic “dance (disco heat)” by sylvester grammy awarding winning producer & 5 time grammy nominated louie vega continues to send dance floors into a peak hour frenzy with his remixes of disco classics on nervous records. the inspiration to delve into masters from this era began when he started remixing masters from the sam records catalogue, which is owned by nervous records, and with whom louie has a long history going back to nervous early 90’s origins. louie is that unique producer who has had success in multiple genres of music including house, r&b, & freestyle and he has brought that talent to help re-ignite new york disco classics like vicky d’s -this beat is mine- and convertion’s -let’s do it- featuring leroy burgess, as well as charting topping disco hits from john davis & the monster orchestra -bourgie bourgie- & -up jumped the devil-. this time, louie put his focus on a track outside of the sam records catalogue, and one that was an international disco hit that also crossed over to becoming a 1978 pop hit, namely sylvester / dance (disco heat). using elements from the 1978 version and combining them with his own original musical and percussion contributions, along with new vocal performances from renowned singer cindy mizelle, louie has refashioned and reignited this 39 year-old production into a 2018 club anthem.

a little over six years ago, let s play house because, in earnest, with a 12-inch called indoor pool. fittingly, the track it revolved around was by runaway, the duo comprised of marcos cabral and jacques renault, and featured remixes by some tight friends of the imprint, beautiful swimmers, slow hands, and soft rocks. we thought it d be fun to celebrate our birthday for once, but not with something too obvious (e.g. a compilation) or too involved (e.g. a warehouse party blowout). what we came up with is this, a 10-inch that reflects a little of the past into the present. appropriately, it includes edits by two of the artists on that debut ep. runaway s is a dusted-off and remixed secret weapon from the act s early days while soft rock s is classic soft rocks, albeit from a more current vintage (it was recorded this year). both absolutely rock. a little twisted, a little tilted, a little tipsy, but, as always, tight and tidy. funny how, since 2009, everything has changed and nothing has changed at all for this label of ours.
